Local Holiday Shopping: Rustic & Refined

The holidays are right around the corner, and Pam Burgess of Rustic & Refined is ready to help you find the perfect gift for everyone on your list! Located in a beautiful 1940’s Cape Cod home, Rustic & Refined’s ten themed rooms include antiques, hand-`painted furniture, florals, seasonal decor, and much more. Pam has nine years of experience in choosing items for her customers in Salem, Virginia. In a business that is increasing in popularity, that knowledge is invaluable.

photo-sep-20-2“I am a picker at heart,” she explains. “I travel the East Coast and find those one-of-a-kind, unique items. Most of the furniture comes from estate sales. There is a thrill to the hunt—finding that special something that someone comes in, loves and buys is an amazing feeling.”

Pam becomes part of the story for every item that she sells. She refinishes certain pieces of furniture, creates floral arrangements and wreaths, and most importantly, she connects customers with new treasures for their homes.
I found a gorgeous buffet in West Virginia,” she recalls. “A couple bought it and used it as a sink in their bathroom. It’s always fun to think about what people are going to do with an item or where they are going to put it.”

photo-sep-20-3Of course, with multiple DIY shoes on HGTV and Pinterest right at the fingertips of everyone with a smartphone, the market for repurposed items is booming. Pam recently visited a Flea Market Extravaganza boasting 3,000 vendors. Knowing what will sell and what customers are seeking is a valuable asset. In addition to knowing her market in Salem, she also looks for specific treasures.

“I carry a little pink book that I try to put people’s names in and what they’re looking for,” she says. “When I find something that fits, I send them a snapshot. If it is what they want, I buy it and bring it home.”

Pam’s friend and colleague, Beth Shearer, has been with her at Rustic & Refined since day one. Together, they work to keep the store open five days each week and find the best home and gift items for their customers.

photo-sep-20Join us for Rustic & Refined’s Holiday Open House Friday, November 3 through Sunday, November 5. Visitors will enjoy light refreshments as they tour the ten decorated rooms and shop for gifts and decorations.

“The main room will have a heavily white-flocked tree. There will be a 9-foot tree in the big sunroom. The entire house will reflect a Christmas theme,” says Pam. This is a great opportunity to purchase your holiday decor and perfect unforgettable gifts for everyone you love!

Fall in Love with Magnolia Home at Grand!

As we declutter and redecorate our homes this fall, we can’t help but notice that something is missing. There are things that need to be updated and replaced. It is time that our furniture reflects our new minimalist values with a touch of elegance. This realization couldn’t come at a better time—as Grand Home Furnishings now offers a variety of pieces from the Magnolia Home collection by Joanna Gaines.

joanna_pailMost of us know Gaines from HGTV’s Fixer Upper, a show she hosts with her husband, Chip. Together, they renovate homes for families and reveal the true beauty of each family’s story through the very walls in which they live. So, it is no surprise that her Magnolia Home collection reflects the same values and mission that you see within these renovation projects. With that in mind, if you haven’t had the chance to preview some of these pieces for yourself, be ready to fall in love.

The traditional dining set in this collection is a statement piece that will become a staple in your family memories and traditions. Not only that, guests will remember it for years to come. The combination of colors and materials will help pull lighter shades from your walls and decorations to open up the room, while darker colors add just enough accent to set it apart.

french_inspired_youth_bedroomrsHowever, don’t just limit yourself to changing up the dining room. Gaines has thoughtfully designed six furniture categories that portray her well-loved style: boho, farm, French-inspired and French youth, industrial, primitive, and traditional. And the best part? Grand Home Furnishings will carry pieces from EACH of these categories! They will include dining room, living room, bedroom, youth bedroom, accent pieces, storage pieces, and even an accessory line. You may just find yourself redecorating your entire home before the holidays. The good news is, you won’t be the only one—and these are purchases that you will cherish and use for years to come. After all, your home is the space where you come to unwind. Realistically, it is your most important investment.

“Home is the most important place,” explains Gaines. “My passion is to help people create beautiful and meaningful spaces in their home. This isn’t just about designing furniture, this is about creating timeless pieces that help tell your home story.”

Of course, you may be thinking that every home’s story is different—and you are right. Every family’s history is unique in its own right, but every once in a while you find collections like this that can capture those beautiful nuances and reflect them for generations. Magnolia Home characterizes a design style that appreciates the uniqueness of vintage elements and creatively combines them in a simple and fresh way that is family-friendly and comfortably livable. That is something to which we can all relate.

The Magnolia Home collection is now available in all Grand Home Furnishings locations (except Summerville and Bristol). You can find more information on their location and the collection by visiting www.grandhomefurnishings.com. Grand Home Furnishings Gives Back

As consumers, nothing is more important than shopping with organizations that give back to our community. With large purchases like furniture, that sentiment is even more important. That’s why we were thrilled to hear that Grand Home Furnishings and Tempur-Pedic International will donate 130 mattresses to Take My Hand Ministries at Highland Heights Baptist Church in Rustburg on July 14.

901239_10151365570487624_317201327_oThe wheels were set in motion for this event when Tempur-Pedic International offered Grand Home Furnishings a substantial quantity of mattresses for donation to an area organization. Grand chose Take My Hand Ministries, a mission of Hyland Heights Baptist Church, because of the valuable work the church has done within the greater Lynchburg area. Their program provides home furnishings and numerous referral and counseling services to families in need.

Additionally, they help with utility bills, give out information and referrals to shelters and housing, mattresses, and household goods. The ministry provides referrals to agencies that help those with disabilities, home delivered hot meals, adult day care, and home heath care as well as referrals to free dental and eye glass clinics.

Father’s Day Gift Guide

Ladies, Father’s Day is right around the corner! A lot of dads are hard to shop for– but we have some great suggestions for those of you who still need to find the perfect gift. No matter what you choose, don’t forget that quality time is the most important gift you can give to the dad that you love.

Dad can always use a comfortable recliner. Quality brands, like La-Z-Boy, can be purchased at Grand Home Furnishings in Roanoke across from Tanglewood Mall. They are having a sale this weekend, ending Monday, in which you can get up to 51% off of ALL La-Z-Boy furniture. Selecting the right color, style and size is important because this could be a staple in your home for years. Visit their website for more information on the styles they offer and to find out if a location near you carries the one you love most!

We just received samples of this cologne, and you are going to love it! A new line of British Sterling fragrances was released in April called H.I.M. It is short for “His Imperial Majesty” and a nod to King George VI. Eventually, the brand plans to release a full line of luxury grooming products in addition to the fragrances that will combine quality, innovation and style. For now, the two fragrances, “Reserve” and “Private Stock,” are available for purchase at many stores in our area. Check out their Facebook page for more information.

father_and_kidsMany of us have been there– your husband or your dad are complaining half way through a shopping trip that their shoes are uncomfortable. Or, his flip flop breaks midway through a family outing. Find out his shoe size, and take a quick trip to Bush Flora in Towers Mall. They offer a wide selection of comfortable and stylish shoes for men. With summer vacations and many backyard barbecues on the horizon, we all know how important it is that your favorite fellas are wearing the right shoes.

Happy Father’s Day to the dads in our lives and yours! We hope you have a fantastic weekend!

We will see you there!

Posh Pad Projects: the CoverUP

With spring cleaning season upon me, there are always a few projects that I intend to start; projects that I have postponed for months, maybe even a couple years.  You know the ones– the bag of beads you bought at the beach hoping to string a necklace, or, the pillow shams you’ve been meaning to sew with the fabric you bought on sale.  I have countless potential projects that could turn out to be extraordinary finished products. Unfortunately, I am either too distracted with other minutia in my free time or I’ve changed my mind about the original idea.

chair2One project that I have been putting off for about three years is re-upholstering a chair I purchased from a consignment store.  The chair is short, squatty and green.  Not a delightful emerald green or luxurious fabric.  Nay, the fabric is avocado green and yellow stripe cotton and needs to be burned.  Though the color was off-putting, I didn’t care.  The chair is perfect for a dressing room and I love it.  It has sat in my bedroom since I bought it, and whatever changes were made to my bedroom décor, the chair never changed.  So this spring cleaning, I decided to spruce it up and toss out the old avocado with the garbage.

I don’t have a lot of experience re-upholstering furniture, so I enlisted the help of my crafty sister who has a gift when it comes to giving new life to old furniture.  First, she and I removed the old fabric using pliers to extract the brads and tacks (reserving them in a bowl for later use).  Then, we measured the new fabric for the top and bottom halves of the chair.  After measuring, we started stretching the fabric over the bottom half.  Making sure the fabric was smooth and pulled tight, we then secured it with a staple gun.  For the front of the chair, where the fabric wraps around the legs, we reused the old fabric brads to give it a polished look.

chair1Once we made sure the fabric was secured on the bottom cushion, we began working on the top of the chair.  This is where it gets tricky.  A little patience is necessary, as hammering in brads can be tedious and scrupulous work.

All you need for this project is a beautiful fabric of your choice, a hammer or mallet, upholstery brads, and pliers.  It really is a fairly simple, at home DIY that can save you a little cash; rather than sending it off for someone else to do.  The finished product is something you can feel good about accomplishing on your own.

Spring is a time of renewal and things coming back to life.  It was time I gave new life to my favorite old chair.  I appreciate it now more than ever.
