Clean Commute Challenge from Ride Solutions

May is officially here and it is time to step up our responsibility as active commuters to protect the environment!

CCC-convoy-2013Over the course of the next month, RIDE Solutions is encouraging commuters to bike, walk, carpool, take transit, or telecommute.

RIDE Solutions, the region’s popular commuter service program, challenges area commuters to take the Clean Commute Pledge. This is a great way to explore your commute options at least one day during the month.

To make the challenge more exciting, RIDE Solutions has opened it up to trips that aren’t exclusively work-related. “While commute trips have a huge impact, we know that most trips a household takes are not related to the daily commute,” says Program Director Jeremy Holmes. “We want people to try carpooling, biking, walking and transit for all kinds of trips – whether it’s carpooling to lunch with coworkers, riding a bike to see a movie, or walking to the store instead of driving.”

In addition to taking the pledge, participants can get more involved by logging their clean trips throughout the month.  Each trip logged gives participants an entry into weekly prize drawings.  Finally, participants can start or join an existing Clean Commute Team, counting each logged trip towards their team performance and earning bigger and better prizes.  Team performance and miles logged will be tracked at the Clean Commute Challenge leaderboard.

“Using a clean commute option, even one day a week, has immediate benefits for both commuters and our communities,” says Holmes.  “It’s a simple way to enjoy the region’s many outdoor amenities, make our communities stronger and cleaner, and actually have fun getting to work.”

The Clean Commute Challenge is one of a number of events organized by RIDE Solutions to celebrate Bike Month. Join the Poppyseed family in celebrating a clean commute and make your pledge today!

Summer Brights Spotlight: Turquoise

Spending summer in the office can be rough. It may seem like everyone is outside enjoying the weather while you are in indoors. (Hey, at least you have air conditioning inside!) While you can’t work on your tan from your cubicle, you can bring a bit of summer to your deskside by adding pops of bright, sunny colors like turquoise to your wardrobe.

inspboardTurquoise was originally found in Turkey and is prized as a gem that brings good fortune. It is a calming and polished blue-green color, reminiscent of exotic oceans, clear pools – and, of course, chic jewelry.

Both relaxing and invigorating, it’s the perfect hue to use in your office space! Put a turquoise framed picture of you and your friends at the beach on your desk to motivate you. Your vacation will be here soon enough!

You can also splurge on a turquoise macaroon during your lunch break, or dress with a sophisticated teal and gold statement ring. The possibilities are truly endless! In the meantime, let this inspo board take you away to a turquoise paradise filled with good fortune!

Summer Products We Love

We plan on spending a lot of time outside this summer. Between festivals, beach trips, and other family events scheduled for July, it is important to be prepared for every scenario nature will give us. If you are prepared, minor setbacks will not inconvenience you and ruin your day. So, for the outdoor lovers out there, we have compiled a small list of things you may want to consider packing for your next adventure.

For campers, beach goers, and sports fans alike, the Breeze XL by Sport Brella is a necessity. A family size shelter, it can provide full coverage for two adults and two children. Its adjustable canopy has a UPF 50+ lining for maximum sun protection and can shift for ventilation and weather protection as well. The floor mat is easy to clean, and it takes about two minutes to assemble. Visit www.sportbrella.com to order your Breeze XL or any of the other excellent sun and weather protection products that they offer.

Bugs have the potential to ruin any outdoor fun during the summer. If you are going somewhere that requires sunscreen, it is always a good rule of thumb to bring some form of bug repellent. La Fresh Travel Lite Insect Repellent Wipes are safe for the whole family and they last for a very long time. They also come with a travelling case to make transportation easy. Their smell is not overpowering, like some repellants, and they work against more than just mosquitoes. Check out their full line of products and order some for yourself at www.lafreshgroup.com.

July BellarainrapsLocated in Richmond, Virginia, Rainraps started as a simple idea on a rainy day. Stacy Struminger, a New Yorker transplanted to Richmond, had long seen the need for a more stylish, lightweight and waterproof accessory. After searching her closet in vain, she decided to create something to meet her needs. Rainraps are reversible and come in a variety of colors to add style to your rainy day. In addition to their water repellant fabric, they dry quickly and are easy to store in their travel friendly pouch. If you plan on spending any time outdoors this summer, this will be essential to your wardrobe. Go to www.rainraps.com to order one (or two!) in your favorite colors.

If you are doing a lot of walking outdoors, it is wise to bring a large bag along in the car that includes your Rainrap, repellent wipes, chargers, etc. However, you may want to place all of your most valuable items (your credit card, drivers license, cash and cell phone) in a crossbody style bag to keep with you at all times. Choose a smaller style that can fit in your tote or beach bag, and consider leaving the larger bag in your car while you explore. We love crossbodys from Olivia and Joy! They come in a variety of colors, making them an excellent match for any summertime outfit. Visit www.oliviaandjoy.com to view their full collection and purchase one of your own.

Keep your skin hydrated and healthy!

Many of us will be spending a lot of time by the water this summer. Whether you are enjoying a trip to a local body of water, or traveling to a beach, it is important to take very good care of your skin.

Mud_jpgFind a good “go-to” product that adds moisture. We like Miracle Skin Transformer Miracle Revival Mud. The thick mud mask improves hydration, firmness, and clarity. It also helps create a more even skin tone and reduce surface shine. Regardless of what you choose, remember to save room for it in your suitcase when you travel. It may be difficult to find a similar product at your destination. Do not rely on the hotel to provide soap that is good for you. Some resorts distribute luxury spa items for skin care, but many hotels provide private label options with mystery ingredients. You could be allergic to their products, and you might not get the same level of moisturizer if you choose to use them.

Don’t forget to save room in your suitcase for sunscreen as well. It seems obvious, but too many people forget to apply sunscreen regularly to prevent sunburn and disease caused by overexposure to the sun. Be proactive, and take responsibility for your health. Set a reminder on your phone to apply sunscreen at regular intervals. If you do get burned, apply aloe often, in addition to your regular moisturizer. Also, nourish your skin with a cool towel soaked in water or milk regularly. Do not peel the sunburn, and remember to pat the affected area dry after a shower.

If you are flying to your destination, moisturize before and during your plane ride. This may sound excessive, especially for those who just want to relax in the air. Remember, the cabin is a small space and relative humidity is much higher than you might think. If soda, alcohol, and salty snacks are necessary to your vacation, it is a good idea to wait and enjoy them once you reach your destination. Also, drink plenty of water. Your body will thank you for it!

We know your schedule is jam packed this summer, but try to set aside a few hours to pamper yourself each month if at all possible. You can save yourself a trip to the spa by creating facial masks from products that you already have in your kitchen.

For example, in Asian Secrets of Health, Beauty, and Relaxation, Sophie Benge recommends using an avocado masks to nourish your face and body. Mash the creamy insides of one avocado into a soft paste and apply to your face using the avocado stone to massage the flesh into your skin with small, upward, circular motions. Wash off with warm water after a few minutes. The nourishing oil is naturally rich in vitamin E and leaves your skin feeling soft.

Look for more ways to pamper your skin on our website, www.lovelybella.com, and share your ideas with us on Facebook!

Fashion Fun– Jelly Sandals

Some of my favorite childhood memories were made wearing jelly sandals. I used to get a new pair in my Easter basket every year. Always pink, always sparkly, they were my most coveted accessory.

It always fascinated me that I never got blisters from these plastic sandals, but I didn’t dwell on it much, I was too busy being my awesome ten-year-old self. Recently, I have noticed the sandals making a come back. When I saw them back in stock at the Gap near me, I let out an audible gasp. I didn’t have to get very close to smell the recognizable rubbery scent and be immediately sent down memory lane. Since first seeing a near carbon copy of my original jelly sandals at Gap last summer, the trend has continued to ramp up, becoming both more popular and more fashion forward.

Now they are carried in nearly every store at the mall, and major fashion houses like Dianne Von Furstenberg, Givenchy, and Chanel have even adopted the style. Because of their unique material and typically bright color, jelly sandals can seem intimidating to style. They are certainly a statement piece, but they actually play surprisingly well with most summer staples.

They are adorable with a pair of boyfriend style jeans and a graphic t-shirt. They can also add a whimsical feel to a simple summer dress. My favorite way to wear them is with an all white outfit; white pants, a white v-neck t-shirt, and a light neutral bag.

This trend is for all ages—so buy a pair for you and your daughter! Share photos of your favorite jelly sandals on our Facebook page. We can’t wait to see them!

Melanoma Awareness Month

One in 50 men and women will be diagnosed with melanoma of the skin during their lifetime. Think of 50 people you know. Now, ask yourself if those 50 people wear sunscreen every time they go out in the sun. We are all human, and it is easy to forget sometimes. Buying additional bottles of suncreen for your car and workplace can help you get into the routine– but first you need to know why that routine is important.
Life is about time. Everyone wants just a little more. However, we are often rushing to get to the next enjoyable moment, and sometimes we forget to prepare for preventable catastrophe. According to the American Cancer Society, one person dies of melanoma every 57 minutes. It takes about five minutes to apply sunscreen on yourself and one very active child. In those five minutes, you could be adding years to your life.
woman-putting-sunscreen-on-child-300x199It is almost bikini season, and that means millions of people are flocking to tanning salons. A startling number of those individuals are teenagers. Do not let your insecurities be your death sentence. Before you get back in the tanning bed this year, consider this: people who first use a tanning bed before age 35 increase their risk for skin cancer by 75 percent. Take it from someone who is pale, with a history of cancer in her family. Those who love you would rather see your pale skin than visit you in the hospital because you wanted a tan for the summer.
My father has battled potentially cancerous moles for years. Up until recently, he often “forgot” to wear sunscreen, despite numerous warnings from his doctor. One such incident resulted in a sunburn on his legs that sent him to the emergency room. Last summer, I asked my 8-year-old sister to remind him to use sunscreen when he went outside. I even went so far as to say, “If daddy doesn’t wear sunscreen he could end up very sick and back in the hospital.”
A few weeks passed, and one day I received a phone call from my dad. He said, with a little sarcasm, “I just wanted to thank you for what you said to your sister. She will not let me leave the house without sunscreen now.”
It doesn’t matter how annoyed you feel by those five minutes you spend putting on sunscreen. What matters is that someone cares enough about you to remind you to do it. So, do us a favor. Grab a piece of paper and write, “sunscreen” on it. Tape it next to your door, and place the bottle of sunscreen somewhere nearby. We care about you, and we hope you will do your best to protect yourself from harmful UV rays this summer.

P.S. You can add additional protection with clothing that carries a UPF rating of 50+. We love products from UV Skinz, and this month they are offering a free baby sunshirt with every order! You should also check out the gorgeous scarves and gloves from Bloxsun for fashionable accessories that offer amazing coverage and protection.
